Troubleshooting

Fixes for the things that most often go wrong — permissions, the key, the microphone, connection problems and the Windows tray.

On this page

Start with the Last action line in Veda's menu-bar or tray panel — it usually says what happened. Settings → Activity → Problems has the details.

Mac: Accessibility permission

Accessibility is how Veda reads the field you're typing in and puts the result back. Without it, the panel says Needs permission and "Veda can't read or replace text until Accessibility is on."

  1. Click Open Accessibility settings in Veda's panel, or go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
  2. Switch Veda on.
  3. That's it — Veda notices within a couple of seconds. No restart needed.

It worked, then stopped after an update? macOS ties the permission to the app's signature, which changes with every Veda build. Switch Veda off and on again in the Accessibility list. If it's still stuck, remove Veda from the list with the – button, then add it back with +.

The key doesn't do anything

  • Is Veda on? The panel says Paused if it's switched off. Turn on Veda is on in Settings → Home.
  • Is it the right key? Check Trigger key in Settings → Home. It's the key on the right of your keyboard — the left one is ignored on purpose.
  • Tap it on its own, quickly. Press and release within about 0.4 seconds, without touching another key. Holding it with another key is treated as a shortcut, not a tap.
  • Is your cursor in a text field? If Veda can't find one, you'll hear a short error sound and nothing changes. Click into the box first.
  • Mac: check the Accessibility permission above.
  • Windows laptop without a Right Ctrl? Choose Right Shift in Settings → Home → Trigger key.

The microphone doesn't work

  • Mac: go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and switch Veda on. Veda opens this page for you if access is off.
  • Windows: go to Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and make sure Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone are on. Check a microphone is connected and selected as the default input.
  • On a licence: voice needs a Groq or OpenAI key in Settings → AI & usage. Gemini can't transcribe.
  • "I didn't catch anything" means the recording was silent or too short. Try again a little closer to the mic.
  • Is Double-tap to dictate on in Settings → Rewrite?

"Couldn't reach Veda's server"

Veda checks your plan with its server, and on the trial and Veda Pro the AI is reached through it.

  • Check your internet connection.
  • A VPN, firewall, proxy or network filter (common on work networks) may be blocking it. Try another network to find out.
  • Wait a moment and try again — Veda also retries on its own.

If it keeps happening on a working connection, tell us in the community.

Windows: the tray icon is hidden

Windows 11 puts new tray icons in the overflow, behind the ^ arrow next to the clock, and only you can move them out.

  1. Click ^, then click Veda's sparkle.
  2. Choose Keep Veda visible on the taskbar — it opens the taskbar settings.
  3. Under Other system tray icons, switch Veda on.

You can also drag the sparkle from the overflow onto the taskbar.

The first launch is blocked

  • Mac — "can't verify the developer": click Done, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway.
  • Windows — "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway.

Both warnings appear because Veda is signed by us rather than by Apple or Microsoft. See Installation.

The result isn't quite right

  • Wrong tone or style? Set your tone under About you in Settings → Writing style, or add a line to Anything else Veda should know? — "No exclamation marks", "Always sign emails 'Alex'". Rules always win.
  • Too formal in chat, or too casual in email? Make sure Pick the tone automatically is on.
  • The reply missed the point of the thread? Scroll so the latest messages are visible, then tap again. Veda reads what's on screen.
